Speed Test Help

Use these tips when a result looks too low, too high or different from another speed test.

Before You Start

Pause large downloads, close streaming apps and stop cloud backups if you want the test to focus on the connection instead of other traffic.

WiFi Or Cable

If WiFi results look weak, test near the router and then compare with an Ethernet cable when possible. The difference can reveal a wireless coverage problem.

Read Download And Upload

Download affects streaming, browsing and file downloads. Upload affects video calls, cloud backups, live streaming and sending large files.

Ping And Jitter

Ping shows how quickly the connection responds. Jitter shows how much that response time changes, which can affect calls and online games.

Repeat The Test

Run the test more than once at different times of day. A simple average is more useful than one isolated result.

Compare Fairly

Different speed tests use different servers, algorithms and network paths. Compare trends and repeated results instead of expecting every service to match exactly.

If every test is far below your internet plan, restart your router, test by cable and contact your provider with several results taken at different times.
